I haven’t talked much about skin care here on PrettyTrippy (in favor of obsessing over makeup – obviously) but let’s change that now. Shall we?
Serum. It’s amazing. You all should be using one. There’s all sorts of complicated mumbo jumbo I could spout off, but let’s keep it simple. Serums are highly concentrated and deeply penetrate the skin. Therefore, if you really want some changes in your skin (fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity, texture, tone, etc.) you should use a serum. I personally feel that (along with staying out of the sun and exfoliating) serum keeps you young. If you want the technical reasons why you should add a serum to your skin care routine look up Caroline Hirons and she’ll tell you all about it. *winks*
How do you use a serum?
Think “sandwich the serum” aka use serum between cleansing and moisturizing. At night (or morning), after cleansing take an itty bit of serum (it’s powerful stuff, ya know) and pat it all over your face/neck/wherever the heck you want and finish with your moisturizer. You’ve effectively sealed in the serum to do wonders while you sleep at night. Congratulations.
Again, this is all very non-technical. Consult Caroline Hirons because she’s the greatest skin care educator evah.
Also keep in mind that serums are a bit pricier per ounce than other skin care products you’re used too. The concentration of all the good stuff, remember? Just suck it up and pay; it’s worth it I PROMISE!
Want to know some of my favorites?
First up is the Estee Lauder Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator in the beautiful blue-bottle pictured on the left. I’m 1000% certain I bought this at a discount somewhere because the price is RIDICULOUS. Don’t look it up; just trust me. Anyways, I came to own this lovely product by accident; I thought it was the Advanced Night Repair. I was wrong, but that’s okay because this serum rocks too.
I mostly like to use serums at night but this one is pretty much the only one I’ll use in the morning. If I’m having a particularly rough time waking up (basically every day), I will pop this on before I do my makeup it really does seem to brighten my skin. The product description states, “This fast-acting serum dramatically reduces the look of uneven skintone: redness, acne marks, dark spots, sun spots and discolorations.” I would agree with helping my uneven skintone and redness but not so much with the rest. Quite honestly though, anything that helps with my redness is a winner in my book.
You can buy this serum at an Estee Lauder counter/online or CCO (where I think I bought mine?) for a lot of money.
THIS PRODUCT IS A GAME CHANGER. Back in the days when I would use foil samples (I just throw them away now), I tried the Genifique samples. I even remember the year – Summer 2011 – I started using this magical formula because it legit changed my life. LEGIT. After using the samples for a month, my skin texture completely transformed into the smoothest skin you can ever imagine. It takes constant use to get those results but ohhhh is it worth it. The product claims to do many things, but the smoothing effects are SO REAL. I didn’t even know my skin had a texture issue until I started using this and it changed my life. So dramatic. I’ve raved about this product before here (and here and here) so this is a tried and true love.
Lancome can be purchased for $78-$105 at Sephora or Lancome counters/online. Worth every penny.
I’m sure you’re thinking, “Gillian, ‘you’re killing me, Smalls’ with the expensive stuff.” Well, here’s your affordable option.
This serum which contains Vitamin C and Hyaluronic acid is a cross between Josie Maran’s Argan Oil and Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum. Oily like the Argan Oil (but not heavy) and Vitamin C rich like the Truth Serum (without that awful orange-y smell). Because it is so affordable, I tend it use it…everywhere…much like Josie Maran’s Argan Oil. My fave spots include my neck, elbows and lightly underneath my eyes before I go to bed. I heard somewhere that Kim Kardashian uses Bio Oil in replacement of an eye cream. I tried this serum instead and it works like a charm. GENIUS. The biggest perk of this serum is the moisture it offers for a much better price than any of the serums at Sephora. But really tho.
OZ Naturals can be purchased on Amazon for ~$20 (estimate because of Amazon price fluctuations).
Previously, I was given a generous, generous sample size of a StriVectin serum and really liked it. I can’t find any posts where I’ve discussed it and I forget which specific one it was…sorry…but here’s a link to their serum and oil offerings. My step mom swears by StriVectin and her skin is seriously fabulous for her age. Take note ladies!
It’s time to get in the serum game if you’re not already. When we’re all old, un-wrinkly ladies you’ll be thanking me :).
Do you use a serum and if so, what’s your favorite one?
What’s your spending limit on a skin care product like this one?
Do you prefer an oil, gel or liquid consistency in your serums?
